The Story of Henry

My husband was driving home one day after work, singing along to the radio, thinking about what to have for dinner, when he saw him crossing the road. A tiny little dog, weaving back and forth across the street, unsteady on his feet. No one else was around. He pulled over, coaxed the dog to him, plunked him in the passenger seat, and took him home to give him some food and water.

The little dog was friendly but painfully thin. My husband gave him some water and some wet dog food, which he gobbled up eagerly. Whem he was finished, he took a closer look at the little dog and saw that he was swarming with fleas. His apricot-colored fur was black in most areas, including his face. My husband picked him up and took him into the bathroom, where he gave him a long cleansing bath. Now that he was flea-free (for the most part) he could evaluate him further. The dog seemed to have some sort of wound on his neck, and he had no fur on his tail and most of his joints, including his knees and the backs of his front legs. You could count every vertebrae of his spine, along with every rib. It didn't look good for the little guy.

When I got home, we decided to take him to the vet and see what we could do for him, and also who he belonged to, as he had no tags. It turned out he had no microchip, either, so after much searching of lost ads, he was ours. And it would only take $1000 to fix him up, which we did not have. So we decided to raise the money. We spread the word about him, who we decided to call Henry. We got several donations from local charities and the Humane Society, and Henry went in for a neuter, a teeth-cleaning, and to get the wound on his neck fixed.

We have now had Henry for a year. His hair has grown back, he has put on weight, and he as sweet and funny as can be. He loves to chew on rawhides and has a cute habit of dancing on his hind legs. We are glad everyday that we saved this little guy from a certain death. I think he is glad, too.
